Lore & Characters

How it all began…

In the small village of Genusus, far from Ankor Mortis, the faithful serfs of the Bone Queen and King Garvan struggled each day to survive. Upon this barren land, their relentless labor seemed meaningless, yet they endured, possessing little more than their solidarity and their faith in their sovereigns.

Isolated from power and forgotten by the great figures of this world, the villagers had developed a peculiar bond with a decrepit recluse named Ysoria. Her powers allowed her, among other things, to recall a lost soul and place it once more within a body. Over the years, her miracles earned her the respect, and eventually the devotion, of the village.

One day, however, troubling news arrived from Ankor Mortis, carried by a cleric escorted by armored warriors. Before the assembled villagers, he solemnly announced that a new power now ruled the capital: Pontificus Maximus Esmond, and that the royal couple had been overthrown.

His accusations seemed absurd to the people of Genusus. Yet they soon understood the true reason for the envoy’s visit: Ysoria. After a short and brutal inquisition, the witch was captured.

The cleric, intoxicated by his authority, could not resist haranguing the crowd with a hateful and deathly sermon, condemning not only his prey, but also the Queen and the King. Indignation quickly grew, and when the soldiers attempted to suppress the shouting crowd, generations of stoic resignation erupted into furious revolt.

The followers of Esmond were overwhelmed by the mob, Ysoria was freed, and the Jacquerie of Genusus began.

Lacking weapons, the insurgents followed an anonymous former soldier to the cursed city of LianTar, the former capital of the Linesti. Though emptied of its inhabitants, the city was strewn with abandoned weapons and armor. Thus equipped, they joined the rebels of the Last Banner in their struggle against the Usurper.

When the King finally returned, he ordered the armed factions to unite within the great army placed under his supreme command. The insurgents accepted with fervor, becoming the Hallowed Jacks of the King !

Fleshless and Relentless

Composed mainly of serfs and laborers, the Hallowed Jacks have never possessed the wealth required to replace limbs and organs lost to decay and battle. They have therefore learned to endure with rotting and desiccated bodies, bearing the constant pain and stigma that accompany them.

Over time, they have developed a deeply stoic and penitential mindset, seeing in their eternal suffering both a test of faith and proof of their blessed condition. Not all undead could endure such dilapidation with the acceptance shown by the Hallowed Jacks, and they take a certain pride in it.

When they occasionally harvest fresh limbs from settlers, they often trade them for religious art, icons, or paintings of the saints. They know full well that they have no material reward to expect in this world, and thus devote themselves entirely to spiritual ones. The flesh is transient—especially for the undead—but faith is eternal.

Despite their deep religiosity, they continue to regard the clergy with a certain distrust after Esmond’s betrayal and the years spent fighting under the Last Banner. Deep down, they remain rebellious and fanatical zealots whose simple minds reject the political maneuverings of the undead nobility, focusing instead on the purity of their worship, magnified by pain, deprivation, and their holy icons.
